Fanball is played in a large indoor arena. Fans in the floor blow hard enough to keep players aloft. It is like being in a very large skydiving simulator.
The player moves according to skydiving principles. When perpendicular to the floor, the player is pushed up. When at an angle to the floor, the player descends at that angle.
You control the player with the left and right arrows. Press the right arrow, the player rotates to the right. Press the left arrow, the player rotates to the left. Aside from menus to restart and exit the game, these are the only controls.
Balls, suspended from parachutes, fall continuously from the top of the arena. The player scores a point by touching a falling ball. After a touch, the parachute is released and the ball falls to the floor.
A mechanical drone, in the shape of a bird, will try to release the balls before the player, and also block the player from scoring. Each time the bird attacks the player, the player loses his balance and falls. After 6 falls on the same level, the game is over.
For an extra effect, the arena is setup as a giant planetarium where the lighting can be changed to simulate the night sky. As you get more points, the night sky will be changed for greater and greater altitudes in space.
Watch out for space objects. Tap a spaceman and you get 3 extra points. Tap a satellite or shuttle and you get 2 points. If you get hit by a rock, you lose 1 point and the collision counts as a fall.
There are 9 levels. You advance to the next level if you can score points before falling 6 times on one level. Advance from level 1 to 2 after 10 points. Advance from level 2 to 3 after another 15 points. Thereafter, it takes 20 points to get to the next level, but the space objects with higher point values make it easier to get to 20 points. Phones with smaller screens have lower point thresholds to get to the next level.
In addition to Fanball, the main game, there is a bonus game, Ribbonball. In Ribbonball, the player tries to score goals while avoiding being hit by the ribbons, as they fall.
In Ribbonball, the player has a small jet pack and can fly forward in the direction they are facing. The fans are turned off.
There are two goals, one on each side of the arena. The player must touch a goal when it is colored green. You get a point for each goal.
Each time the ribbon hits the player, the player falls. After 6 falls on the same level, the game is over.
